A programming language is a specialized tool designed to develop software applications. Though various programming languages exist for different purposes, they are ultimately intended to control computer functions and execute programs.

One might wonder, why not just rely on Excel for data storage and visualization? Why put in the effort to learn complex coding or compile scripts? Programming, in fact, offers unmatched efficiency and flexibility that Excel can’t replicate. It allows for automation, streamlined workflows, and time-saving scripts, especially useful in collaborative settings.

But why hasn’t a specific language emerged solely for data science? Although programming languages have evolved over time, it wasn’t until the mid-20th century that influential ones appeared—COBOL in 1956 for business applications, FORTRAN in 1957 for scientific computing, and LISP in 1958 for artificial intelligence. Before this, programs were painstakingly coded by hand without the aid of compilers due to the complexity involved. Each of these languages was crafted for a particular domain, and that specialization meant that no single language was designed with data science in mind. Instead, each serves as a tool with shared computational foundations, adapted over time to meet diverse needs.
